Whoops, I Did It Again…

Well that’s certainly my bad deed for the day.

SOOOOOO how about that content, huh? Yeah, uh, well….

Now, I wasn’t foolish enough to make any New Year’s Resolutions about keeping this thing here active, but I did make a resolution to finish off my Deck Building Challenge of Doom – one deck of every currently legal colour combination. For those of you following along at home, this is what I have so far:

Mono Colour (4/5)
White: Kitsune Mystic (allowed in my playgroup), Enchantments
Black: Lim-Dul the Necromancer, Zombies
Red: Jaya Ballard, Task Mage, Burn and Jaya themed (every card with Jaya Ballard flavour text that can legally go in the deck. Yes, including Mystic Compass and Melting…)
Green: Omnath, Locus of Mana, OMNATH SMASH (General Damage deck)

Allied Two Colour (2/5)
Red/Green aka Gruul: Radha, Heir to Keld, Tribal Elf/Warrior
Green/White aka Selesnya: Tolsimir Wolfblood, Tokens

Enemy Two Colour (4/5)
Black/White aka Orzhov: Ghost Council of Orzhova, Blink/Tokens
Blue/Red aka Izzet: Nin, the Pain Artist, hurting you for drawing cards. And making you draw cards.
Black/Green aka Golgari: Savra, Queen of the Golgari, Sacrifice and board control
Green/Blue aka Simic: Edric, Spymaster of Trest, Rogues and Superspies

Shard (3/5)
Blue/Black/Red ala Grixis: Jeleva, Nephalia’s Scourge, Tribal Vampires
Black/Red/Green aka Jund: Sek’Kuar, Deathkeeper, eating my own dudes for Fun and Profit and Face Smashing
Red/Green/White aka Naya: Mayael the Anima, My Friends Are Bigger Than Your Friends

Wedge (5/5) (C’mon Wizards name these things already)
White/Black/Red: Kaalia of the Vast, Demons and Dragons and Angels OH MY
RUG: Animar, Soul of Elements, Big Creatures on the Cheap
Black/Green/White: Doran, the Siege Tower, I Like Big Butts (vaguely Treefolk tribal)
Red/White/Blue: Zedruu the Greathearted, Take My Stuff
BUG: Damia, Sage of Stone, I Drop My Hand, I Pick It Up Again

I haven’t built 5-colour or colourless yet…

Since I made my resolution, I actually finished some of the half-built decks I had lying around, so these decks are now built but haven’t been tested yet:

White/Blue aka Azorius: Isperia the Inscrutable, toolbox fliers
Green/White/Blue aka Bant: Rafiq of the Many, A Rafiq Deck Like Every Other Rafiq Deck

And I’ve also started and ordered cards for Black/Red (Rakdos) which is Wort, Boggart Auntie, Goblin Tribal, and have sleeved up the White/Blue/Black (Esper) C13 Precon with Oloro, Ageless Ascetic at the helm, which I’ll be tweaking here and there. The Isperia and Wort decks make up for the otherwise lacking Allied Colour Pairs listing.

So what do I have left?

Mono-Blue
Blue/Black
White/Red
5 Colour
Colourless

Not too bad (although I am cheating on the Esper deck a bit since at this point in time it is literally just the pre-con deck).

So, I need some ideas for what I have left. Time for a poll!

The Mono-Blue options

  1. Ixidor, Reality Sculptor. I’ve tagged this one “Ixidor’s all signing, all dancing, all morph, 3-card Monte of DOOOOOM”. As many mono-U morphs as I can fit in, and as many ways to turn them face down as I can find (so far limited to Ixidron, Master of the Veil, Weaver of Lies and maaaaybe Backslide. If I’ve missed any – aside from ones that can turn themselves face down like Vesuvan Shapeshifter and Mischievous Quanar – please let me know!). This was my first idea for a mono Blue deck; I’m not a fan of decks that just counter everything and I’m a bit of a Timmy/Johnny so constantly flicking morphs up and down amuses me… Turn Weaver of Lies face up, flipping all my other morphs back down, one of which is Master of the Veil to turn Weaver of Lies face down… do it all again… But that doesn’t really get me anywhere.
  2. I have mentioned this guy before:

I don’t think any more needs to be said 😛
  3. Born of the Gods gave us this guy

    And this spell..

Again, not too much more to be said, I think. Leviathans, Kraken, Octopi, Serpents and Merfolk, AHOY!

The other colour combination I’m considering is Red/White. Again I have three options:

  1. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. YAWN. But I have been thinking about this one for a while, so I’ve pretty much got it mapped out in my head. But it will look like everyone else’s Gisela deck, and that’s not a good thing.
  2. Anax and Cymede. I keep seeing all these “two target creature” spells and thinking “Hey….” This one will be about 50/50 Heroic and Battalion, and I think could be interesting… Right up until all the little solder dudes get outclassed by every other creature on the board (sometime around turn 6)…
  3. Aurelia, the Warleader. Also known as ATTTTTTACK!!!!!! ATTTTTACCKKKKK!!!!!!

So, gentle reader, I give you the chance to help me decide. Hit me up in the comments, and/or vote in the polls below!!!

Until next time (whenever that is)!

Arsenal: Really?

The Commander intro decks that were produced last year performed so far above expectations that Wizards of the Coast decided that the Commander format was here to stay (duh), and that they would support the format by releasing Commander specific products every single year.

And there was much rejoicing

“But,” Wizards said, “we work so far in advance that we can’t do that this year. So instead, we’re going to release… The Commander’s Arsenal.” And I quote from Mark Rosewater at San Diego Comic Con:

“So what is Commander’s Arsenal? The best way to describe it is a treasure trove of Commander Goodies” … “If you’re a Commander player, lots of goodies for you.”

And there was cautious optimism.

A little while ago, the nature contents of the “Arsenal” were revealed:

  • 18 premium foil cards
  • 10 oversized premium foil cards
  • 120 UltraPro foil card sleeves
  • 20 double-sided Battle Marks (+ and –)
  • A life counter that goes up to 99

So far we know there is a Sylvan Library, a THE Mimeoplasm, and an oversized Azusa, Lost but Seeking. It also appears there’s going to be a Command Tower (althought that’s unconfirmed)

Some thoughts:

  • “premium foil”? I thought “premium” and “foil” were the same thing – c.f Super Secret Tech? If not, I assume it means the foiling process will be similar to the Premium Deck Series ones and not the standard foil.
  • Oversized cards. What a waste of cardboard. I have the oversized cards from the Commander decks. I don’t use them. I have oversized cards from the AVR pre-release. I don’t use them. PLEASE STOP MAKING THESE STUPID THINGS
  • 120 card sleeves. Well, I’m going to go ahead and assume that’s because prints runs are done in lots of 60 and they put in two packs. A less charitable person would say “You know how many cards in in a Commander deck, right?”
  • What The Fuck is a “Battle Mark”?!? Not Battle Marker, mind you…. Battle Mark is a cut and paste direct from the Wizards website. It’s a double sided counter with “+” and “-” on it. I cannot see a use for these, given that if you play with +1/+1 or -1/-1 counters you already use something….
  • Life counter. Different. Ugly, but different. I can see the use for this.
  • 18 (usable) cards. 18. That isn’t what I’d call an Arsenal. That’s less than a 21 gun salute, and I don’t think anyone would call that an arsenal. I was expecting much much more in this than 18 cards. Ah well, if it’s the same price as the precons (which were, need I remind you, 100 cards) then I can deal with that, I guess. Seems like not much for the money though.
  • Wait, it’s $75 freaking dollars? HOLY SHIT SON WHAT THE FUCK. Actually, by the time it gets to my sleepy little shores, I’m told by my FLGS that it’ll “probably be around $100”.

AND THERE WAS MUCH WAILING AND GNASHING OF TEETH

Way to drop the ball Wizards. You have proved that you are willing and able to provide an ENTIRE DECK to us for half this price. You’re giving us 20% of a deck, plus a bunch of stuff we don’t want and didn’t ask for, for 200% of the price.

What really pisses me off about this is if it sits on shelves and Wizards then thinks “oh maybe Commander isn’t as popular as we thought; we’ll cancel the yearly release idea.”…. That thought scares me.

Hey Wizards: We want cards. We don’t want undersized wallpaper. We don’t want counters of negligible worth or use. We don’t (necessarily) need more sleeves. And we sure as fuck don’t want to pay twice the price of the premium deck series – something that was cancelled because it wasn’t selling – for 18 freaking playables.

The hell.

Deckbuilding: Garza Zol – HELP!

I now have a pile of Vampires and Lands sitting in front of me…. The problem with that is I have no idea how or why or what blue cards the deck should be running. Here are the themes I’ve considered so far:

  • Vampire Tribal. This is what I’m basically defaulting to, and I’m not unhappy about it, but it’s not going to be enough for a full deck, let alone a Blue-Red-Black deck – 90% of the Vampires (slightly less now with Innistrad but bear with me) are mono black, which leads me to think if I wanted Vampire tribal I’d just make Anowon or Drana the general and be done with it.
  • “Combat Damage Matters”. Quite a few of the Vampires (including Garza) have combat damage triggers – most when they hit the opponent, usually involving either drawing cards or putting +1/+1 counters on creatures. This, at least, would give me an idea for what to include blue for, as with bounce and unblockability it allows your creatures to connect more often. Also looking at things like Cover of Darkness and Intimidation.
  • Killin’ All The Mans, All The Time. If there’s one thing that connects Blue Black and Red, it’s creature control. No doubt there will be some (coughalotcough) that makes it in here anyway but I already have one deck (Savra) which tries to keep the board clear, and that has already drawn some comments about how it operates (and truth be told, it’s not even that good at it, really)
  • Royalty. Just for gits and shiggles, I’ll be putting in Royal Assassin, Prince of Thralls, Sedris, Unscythe, (but obviously not King Suleiman – talk about your specific abilities!!) and Decree of Pain. I think that’s about as far as I can take that joke though – any other suggestions? Thrones? Sceptres? Crowns?
  • Plague. Looking at the plague cards again, there’s not a single one I’d actually want to play – with the possible exception of Necrotic Plague, but that would only really work if I had no creatures (so they can’t give it back to me). I might put Pestilence in here though, just because it fits the theme, and it actually good. Again though, that’s yet another black card in a deck that’s already swimming in them
  • Something Else. Help?

As you can see, I have plenty of ideas for a mono-Black Garza Zol deck. That’s not really the point of things though, is it? What red and (especially!) blue cards/strategies should I be looking at here?

Nin: Big Pile O’ Cards

Stage 2 of the build: I have 77 cards I want to put in the deck 🙂 As much as I’d like to throw 23 land in and have a go, it seems that probably wouldn’t work too well. So. Here are the cards I’m considering, with notes where appropriate. What should I keep? Cut? What did I miss?

Drawing Cards

Aeon Chronicler
Ancestral Vision
Azure Mage
Barbed Shocker
Careful Consideration
Compulsive Research
Concentrate
Deep Analysis
Font of Mythos
Frantic Search
Howling Mine
Jace Beleren
Jace’s Archivist
Jace’s Ingenuity
Kami of the Crescent Moon
Magus of the Jar
Memory Jar (obvious card is obvious!)
Mindmoil
Mulldrifter
Mystic Remora (Yes Rhystic Study is better. I don’t got any)
Teferi’s Puzzle Box
Temple Bell
Think Twice
Thought Reflection (win more?)
Tolarian Winds
Vision Skeins
Windfall
Words of Wisdom

Damaging You

Adamaro, First to Desire
Cerebral Vortex
Molten Psyche (slightly nervous about enabling Metalcraft with this one)
Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind
Psychosis Crawler
Sokenzan Spellblade
Soul’s Fire (Targets: Adamaro, Aeon Chronicler, Psychosis Crawler, Soramaro)
Spiraling Embers
Sudden Impact

No Hand Size

Library of Leng
Reliquary Tower
Venser’s Journal

Indestructible Dudes to draw cards off

Darksteel Brute
Darksteel Myr
Darksteel Sentinel
Manor Gargoyle

Copy Effects

Echo Mage
Mischievous Quanar
Twincast

Mana Rocks/Spells

Darksteel Ingot
Inner Fire
Izzet Signet
Mana Geyser
Manalith (this is kinda meh, I realise)

Counter Suite

Cryptic Command
Dream Fracture
Faerie Trickery
Hinder
Remand
Rewind

Graveyard Hate

(This gets its own heading because of the way this deck probably works. People will have full hands, and will be discarding a lot of cards. I want to make sure I can clamp down on graveyard shenanigans)
Relic of Progenitus
Scrabbling Claws
Tormod’s Crypt

Good Stuff (good in general, not necessarily on-theme)

Call the Skybreaker
Electrolyze
Lightning Greaves
Rite of Replication
Sensei’s Divining Top
Sol Ring
Spin into Myth
Word of Seizing

Cute Stuff (the first to get cut, probably)

Conflagrate
Mask of Memory
Ivory Crane Nestuke (Can’t find any Ebony Owl Netsukes, which would be much better)
Comet Storm (or any other X spell. I’m just not sure that I’ll be far enough ahead on life to run things like Molten Disaster/Earthquake)
Akki Underling (Even a 4/2 first striker isn’t that good)
Keep Watch (the very definition of “narrow application”)
Parallectric Feedback (my super-secret Genesis Wave tech. Not sure if it should be in here, but kinda keen to keep it)
Quenchable Fire (in EDH this is basically 6 damage for 3R. Good enough?)
Forced Fruition

Importantish Notes

There are still cards I don’t have that I’m trying to trade for that will go in here; among them:

Blue Sun’s Zenith
Graceful Adept
Myojin of Seeing Winds
Soramaro, First to Dream
Stroke of Genius
Sturmgeist

Koth of the Hammer
Vicious Shadows

Creepy Doll
Stuffy Doll
Thousand-Year Elixir

Also there are a number of spells in here that I’m not particularly attached to, but I’d like second and third opinions – what would you add? remove? keep?

Yet another Theme change

Hopefully the last one. I’ve altered the theme, which unfortunately meant losing the magic card montage I made up, but this is a very easy theme to read, and hopefully will solve the “dark grey on black” comments page.

I’ve also added a “subscribe via rss” link on the right hand side here —> and there is a button that does the same thing on the top-right of the screen.

Improvement? Or not?

Where’d you all come from?

So I imagine there’s a lot of “hmm, what’s this, oh it’s that I’m never coming back again” going on here, but I’ve had 120+ views in the last 9 hours! I was expecting maybe 40-50…. Hope you all like what you’re seeing and keep coming back – if you want to be updated when there’s a post there’s a Subscribe box on the right hand side over there —-> and you should be able to add this to your RSS feed as well (the button is in the middle of the Simic Sky Swallower card)

Thanks for the comments so far, and I’ll attempt to keep your interest 🙂

Since this is a bit of a “meta-post” (a post about posting), I’ll use this opportunity to ask: What do you think of the theme I’m using? Easy to read? Not too hard to get around? It took me a little while to figure out where the “Leave a comment” link was (hint: Near the title, after the tags), and as stated above I can’t see the RSS link but I’m sure it’ll be on here somewhere. I’ve changed the theme now; comment link is after the post, and the RSS link as is stated above.  I may play around with some different themes later on but I’m reasonably happy with this one for the moment.

Cheers all!
